Overview 

What is a Pop-up? Pop-ups are a new web browser window that is opened by a website. Certain types of downloaded content such as advertisements, images, music, and forms can cause pop-ups. Many websites use pop-ups to display information without disrupting the page currently open. For example, if you were to fill in a form on a web page and needed extra guidance, a pop-up might provide needed information without causing loss of anything already entered. Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari browsers differ in their behavior when clicking to access Supersite assignments and linking to a new pop-up window. Some browsers will bring the information to the front of the main window (page), while other browsers may reload the content or open a new tab. Sometimes the pop-up windows containing the assignment content will not open at all. VHL Supersites will operate more efficiently if your Internet browser has certain preferences set. For all supported browsers, “Pop-ups” from the Supersite must be allowed in order to view all information on the site.

MS EDGE (Windows)

Disable a Pop-Up Blocker Within Edge Settings

  • Open Edge.
  • Click the three-dotted More actions, then click Settings within the drop-down menu.
  • Scroll down to Advanced Settings and click View advanced settings.
  • Under Block pop-ups slide the setting to On.

 

CHROME (Windows)

Disable a Pop-Up Blocker on a Web Page

If a Web page tries to send you a pop-up when your blocker is turned on, an icon with a red "x" will appear in your address bar.

Clicking the icon will allow you to:

  • Always allow pop-ups from this site
  • Continue blocking pop-ups
  • Manage pop-up blocking

 

Disable a Pop-Up Blocker Within Chrome Settings

  • 1. Open Chrome.
  • 2. Click the Chrome menu in the upper right corner.
  • 3. Click Settings in the drop-down menu.
  • 4. At the bottom of the page, click Show advanced settings....
  • 5. Under Privacy, click Content settings....
  • 6. Under Pop-ups, select Allow all sites to show pop-ups.
  • 7. Click Done in the bottom right-hand corner.

 

FIREFOX (Windows)

Disable a Pop-Up Blocker on a Web Page

If a Web page tries to send you a pop-up when your blocker is turned on, an information bar will appear at the top of your browser window.

Clicking the Options button within the information bar will allow you to:

  • Allow pop-ups from this site
  • Edit your pop-up blocker options
  • Never show an information bar when pop-ups are blocked
  • Display the blocked pop-up window

 

Disable a Pop-Up Blocker Within Firefox Settings

  • 1. Open Firefox.
  • 2. Click the Firefox menu in the upper right.
  • 3. Click Options in the drop-down menu.
  • 4. In the left-hand navigation, click Content.
  • 5. Under Pop-ups uncheck Block pop-up windows.

 

MAC OS X 10.6+ USERS

SAFARI (MAC OS X)

When your blocker is turned on, there is no obvious alert that a pop-up has been blocked. So you'll want to go into Safari's settings to turn off the blocker.

  • Open Safari.
  • In the top left of the window, click Safari
  • Click Preferences in the drop-down menu.
  • Click the Security tab found on the top row.
  • Under Web content, uncheck Block pop-up windows.
