Vista Higher Learning (VHL) offers rostering and single sign-on (SSO) integrations that enable schools and districts to automate user and course creation, allowing direct access to VHLCentral from a school’s SSO dashboard.
While these integrations provide efficient data management, they also introduce specific requirements and limitations. This FAQ addresses the most common questions and issues for instructors and students at schools using rostering and SSO with VHL.
General Access & System Requirements
What are the system requirements for VHLCentral?
VHLCentral supports current versions of all major browsers and operating systems, as outlined in our System Requirements section of the knowledge base.
Important:
JavaScript must be enabled
Third-party cookies must be allowed
I don’t know how to log in. What should I do?
If your school uses SSO with VHL, you must access VHLCentral through your school’s SSO provider.
Log in to your SSO platform (e.g., ClassLink, RapidIdentity).
Click the VHL application tile provided by your IT administrator.
The tile name and icon may vary by district. Common names include:
Vista
Vista Higher Learning
VHLCentral
I don’t see a VHL tile on my SSO dashboard.
Your school’s IT department manages which applications appear on your SSO dashboard.
Common reasons the tile may be missing include:
The integration has not been set up yet
You have not been granted access
The tile is listed under a different name
Contact your school’s IT department or curriculum administrator for assistance.
I receive a “User Not Found” message when logging in.
This error means the user information passed during the SSO launch does not match a user record in VHL.
Possible causes:
Most common: Your account is not included in the roster data sent to VHL.
Less common: Your account is included, but did not load correctly.
If your IT administrator confirms you are included in the roster and the error persists, they should escalate the issue to VHL Technical Support. The user’s first and last name will be required for investigation.
I receive an error when accepting the VHL Terms of Service.
If an error appears after accepting the Terms of Service, the issue is usually related to browser cookie settings.
Steps to resolve:
Confirm cookies are enabled in your browser.
Retry logging in.
If the issue continues, contact VHL Technical Support.
Instructor FAQs
How do I set up my classes?
To set up classes using the Roster Assistant integration:
Log in through your school’s SSO dashboard.
Click the Vista Higher Learning tile.
Select the Program (book) you want to use.
Check the box next to each class you want to set up.
Available classes are based on roster data sent by your school. For ClassLink users, data flows from the SIS → ClassLink → VHL via daily synchronization.
If you teach multiple Programs, repeat the process for each Program. Students are enrolled automatically once a class is linked.
Can multiple instructors be assigned to the same class?
Yes. Roster Assistant supports co-instructors if the roster data assigns them to the same class.
The first instructor to link the class becomes the main instructor.
Additional instructors are automatically added as co-instructors.
If the wrong instructor is assigned as the main instructor, delete the class and relink it using the correct instructor.
I don’t see the Program (book) I need.
Program availability is determined by your school or district’s licensing agreement with VHL.
If a Program is missing, contact your curriculum director to review licensing with your VHL Modern Language Specialist.
I’m missing one or more classes.
Possible reasons include:
Most common: The class is missing from the roster data or the instructor is not associated with it.
Less common: The class start date is more than one week in the future. Only active classes and those starting within one week appear.
Your school’s IT administrator can review and correct roster data as needed.
A student is missing from my class.
If a student does not appear after class setup:
Most common: The student is missing from the roster data sent to VHL.
Less common: Enrollment limits defined by licensing have been exceeded.
Contact your IT administrator to verify roster data. If licensing limits may be involved, contact VHL Technical Support.
My classes are grayed out and can’t be selected.
Classes may appear grayed out for two reasons:
Most common: The class is already set up in VHLCentral.
Less common: The school is not properly mapped in VHLCentral and shows “Not in any school.”
If you see “Not in any school,” contact VHL Technical Support.
My class is set up under the wrong Program.
To change the Program:
Delete the course in VHLCentral.
Log in again and set up the class using the correct Program.
Important: Deleting a course removes all grades and submissions. Export or record data before deleting.
Can a class use more than one Program?
VHLCentral does not support a single class using multiple Programs simultaneously.
Options include:
Delete and recreate the class using a different Program (grades and submissions will be lost).
Work with your IT administrator to create multiple class sections with the same student enrollments, then assign each to a different Program.
If students transfer classes, will their grades transfer?
Grades and submissions will transfer automatically only if:
Both classes use the same Program.
The start dates are within one week of each other.
The end dates are within one week of each other.
Student FAQs
I don’t see my class or Program.
Program tiles appear only after the instructor completes class setup.
Possible reasons include:
Most common: The instructor has not finished setting up the class.
Less common: Your enrollment is missing from the roster data.
Instructors can verify enrollment in the class roster. If missing, the issue should be reported to the school’s IT administrator.
